When a renter books one of your units, they go through a single guided checkout. Knowing the steps helps you answer renter questions and set up your fleet so the flow runs smoothly.
The steps a renter sees
- Questions (only if you set screening questions) — the renter answers your per-category intake questions. See screening questions.
- Review — they confirm the unit, dates, pickup/return times, and any add-ons, and see a full price breakdown (rental, add-ons, sales tax, processing fee, and the refundable deposit).
- Pay — they enter their card. The card is authorized at this point (a hold is placed) and the slot is reserved.
- Sign — they read your rental agreement and type their full legal name to e-sign it. See how renters sign.
- Documents — they verify their driver's license (instantly via Stripe Identity or by photo) and upload proof of insurance, if your unit requires them. See verified renter docs.
- Done — they get a clear confirmation.
What the confirmation says
The final screen depends on your setup:
- Confirmed and paid — if you auto-approve and all documents passed, the booking is confirmed and the card is charged.
- Documents submitted, awaiting approval — if you review each booking, their card stays authorized (not charged) and they're told it won't be charged until you approve.
- One step left — if they deferred documents, their slot is held but the booking isn't confirmed until they finish uploading. If they don't finish in time, the hold is released and the booking cancels.
Good to know: The card is authorized before the renter signs and uploads documents. That way the slot is locked in while they finish, and you never chase payment after the fact.
Why dates and times matter
A pickup time and a return time are required — the checkout won't let a renter through without both. These feed the contract, reminders, and pickup/return timing, so they can't be left blank.
