Patriot Hauls doesn't set your sales tax rate or file it for you. It charges the rate you enter, at checkout, and tracks what was collected so you have a clean record. Here's exactly how it works.
What gets taxed
Sales tax applies to the rental, add-ons, and delivery fee. The security deposit is never taxed, since it isn't income; it's money you're holding for the renter.
Setting your rate
Go to Dashboard → Payments → Payment Settings → Taxes & Fees and enter your sales tax rate (%). It's one flat rate for your whole account, not something set per listing or per unit.
Heads up: Patriot Hauls doesn't know what you owe. You're responsible for entering your correct rate, and it varies by state (and sometimes by locality). Confirm your rate and filing obligations with your accountant or your state's tax authority; this isn't tax advice.
Added vs. absorbed: who the renter sees pay it
Right below the rate, you choose who pays the sales tax:
- Renter pays tax on top of my listed price ("added"). Checkout adds the tax to your listed price, so the renter's total goes up by the tax amount. At checkout they see a Sales tax line with the dollar amount.
- My listed price includes tax ("absorbed"). The renter pays exactly your listed price, no more. Patriot Hauls works out the tax hiding inside that price for your records. At checkout they still see a Sales tax line, but it's marked Included instead of a separate charge, so the numbers don't look like an extra fee stacked on top.
Either way, you owe the same tax to your state; this setting only decides whether it's added on top of your price or backed out of it. Picking the wrong one changes what your reports say you collected, so it's worth getting right before you go live with a rate.
Where the tax shows up afterward
- On the renter's checkout summary and paid invoice, right alongside the rental, add-ons, and any processing fee (in "added" mode).
- On your Accounting Now page, under Tax Collected. This isn't yours to keep; it's tracked separately from your net income. See A tour of Accounting Now.
- In your Quarterly Tax Summary table on the same page, broken out by quarter to make filing easier.
- In Transactions, itemized per booking. See Invoices and refunds.
If you issue a refund, you can refund the tax portion along with the rest of what the renter paid. See Invoices and refunds.
