Insurance verification

    Last updated 2026-06-24

When a renter checks out, they upload proof of insurance and Patriot Hauls reads it with a vision AI. The AI confirms the document really is insurance, checks it's current and carries liability coverage, and pulls out the key details so you don't have to squint at a phone photo.

    What the renter uploads

At checkout the renter uploads a photo or PDF of their current auto insurance — an insurance card, a declarations page, or a Certificate of Liability Insurance all work. Insurance is always re-asked on every booking, even for repeat renters, because coverage can lapse between rentals.

    What the AI checks

For each document, the verifier decides whether it's genuine insurance and assigns a verdict:

    • Verified — a real, current policy with liability coverage.
    • Flagged — looks like insurance but needs a human look (for example, the AI couldn't read it clearly, or couldn't confirm liability coverage).
    • Rejected — not an insurance document, or the policy is expired.

It also extracts and shows you the insurer, policy number, named insured, and expiration date right on the booking.

Good to know: Commercial and business policies — and family policies — often list a business or another person as the named insured rather than the renter. That's normal. By default Patriot Hauls accepts a genuine, current, liability-bearing policy even under a different name, and simply flags the name difference for you to confirm.

    The name-match setting

In Settings → Workflow under Document Verification, you'll find "Require insurance name to match renter."

    • Off (recommended): a valid, current policy is accepted even if it's under a business or family name — the mismatch is flagged for your review.
    • On: any name mismatch is held for your manual approval before the booking can confirm.

    When the AI can't auto-verify

If a document is flagged or the renter's situation is unusual (like a commercial Certificate of Insurance), you can approve it yourself. On the booking, under Proof of Insurance, use Approve insurance manually — you're the only one who can truly confirm a renter is covered, so this is your human override. You can Revoke approval later if needed.

    Cost

The insurance read is cheap and is not metered against your verification credits — only the ID verification consumes a credit. There's a generous daily cap on insurance reads purely to prevent abuse.
